Reading a Forest Instead of Touring It
A note on why we don't promise sightings, and what to do instead.
The most common question we get before a stay is some version of: what will we see? It's a fair question, and we'd rather answer it honestly than sell an experience we can't guarantee.
The wider landscape around Dandeli — the Kali Tiger Reserve and the forests beyond it — is genuinely rich habitat, home to species from elephants and sloth bears to hornbills and giant squirrels. But habitat isn't a guarantee of an encounter. Sightings depend on season, time of day, weather, and a fair amount of luck.
What we can promise is a forest that rewards attention even without a headline sighting: alarm calls that tell you something moved nearby, fresh tracks on a trail, the particular racket of a hornbill's wingbeats overhead. Guests who come expecting a wildlife-documentary highlight reel are often disappointed. Guests who come willing to read the smaller signs tend to leave with more than they expected.
